About Dr. Sukanto K. Das
Transforming Nephrology Care in Eastern India
Dr. Sukanto K. Das is one of Eastern India’s most respected nephrologists, with an impressive clinical journey that spans more than 25 years. He has dedicated his career to improving kidney care and has played a vital role in establishing and expanding renal transplant programs throughout Odisha.
Currently, he is a Consultant Specialist in the Department of Nephrology at Manipal Hospitals (formerly AMRI) in Bhubaneswar. Dr. Das combines his clinical skills with a commitment to patient-centered care, striving to enhance health outcomes for individuals facing complex renal issues through innovative procedures and personalized treatment plans.
Dr Sukanto Kishore Das is currently working as senior consultant, Nephrology at AMRI Hospitals, Bhubaneswar.
He has completed DM in Nephrology from SGPGI, Lucknow, under the guidance of distinguished nephrologists like Prof R K Sharma, Prof Amit Gupta and Prof Narayan Prasad. The department of Nephrology of SGPGI is one of the best in India. This department is extensive in terms of all aspects of nephrology training and patient care. During the three years of DM degree he had the unique opportunity of receiving a vibrant and rigorous training in all areas of nephrology such as haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, CRRT, critical care nephrology, intervention nephrology, vascular access, renal biopsies along with an extensive training in care and management of renal transplantation patients.
He has completed his MD in internal Medicine from KGMU (King George Medical university) Lucknow, where he was awarded gold medal for an excellent academic achievement and performance.
He has played a pivotal role in establishing the Dialysis and Transplant programme at AMRI Hospitals, Bhubaneswar which is amongst the largest programmes in the state of Orissa. His key area of focus has been in the field of renal transplantation and intervention nephrology. He is amongst the pioneers who have been instrumental in expanding the renal transplantation program in the state of Orissa.
He has presented papers and posters at several conferences at zonal and national level and published scientific papers in indexed nephrology and transplantation journals
He is involved in carrying out camps, community awareness programs in different parts of Orissa and adjoining parts of West Bengal for awareness about kidney diseases amongst general public. He also remains active on various platforms such as print, electronic and social media for spreading awareness about kidney diseases amongst common people.
A Legacy of Leadership & Clinical Excellence
Dr. Das’s career is built on a strong educational background. He received his MBBS from Maharaja Krishna Chandra Gajapati Medical College & Hospital and went on to obtain an MD in General Medicine from King George’s Medical University in Lucknow, where he earned a prestigious Gold Medal. His specialization in Nephrology was completed at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, one of India’s leading medical institutions.
Throughout his career, Dr. Das has held significant positions, including:
- Chief Consultant Nephrologist at IGKC Multispecialty Hospitals, where he launched a renal transplant program in 2022.
- Head Nephrologist at Manipal Hospitals (previously AMRI), where he established a transplant unit in 2014.
- Former Associate Professor at IMS & SUM Hospitals.
Dr. Das has been instrumental in advancing nephrology practices in Odisha, contributing to over 500 successful renal transplants and various advanced interventional nephrology procedures across several top-tier institutions.

- Renal Replacement Therapies: Proficient in managing complex dialysis protocols and treating acute kidney injury (AKI).
- Critical Care Nephrology: Skilled in handling ICU nephrology cases, including Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT).

He has also authored articles for peer-reviewed journals like the Indian Journal of Transplantation and the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research. His book, A Disrupted World, reflects on the geopolitical consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and has garnered positive reviews.
